I walked to school during my elementary school years. We lived in a quiet neighborhood and it was about a half-mile walk. One cold morning, I stopped at the corner where I normally met my friends. As I stood on the sidewalk, waiting, I glanced back toward where I walked from. There was a corner house diagonally across the intersection. I saw the same 1970 Corolla that was normally parked there. The young lady who lived at the house drove it. I never got to see her start it . . . And then there she was, walking down the driveway to where she parked her car on the side of the road. She was dressed for work - blazer, black slacks, black pumps. She walked around the back of the car, unlocked and opened the door, then got in the car. A few seconds later, the starter was spinnning the engine and little puffs of white smoke were coming out of the exhaust. But the car didn’t start. She tried again, and again, and again. She kept trying to start her car but the car wasn’t in a mood to start. After several tries (I stopped counting after ten), she popped the hood and finally got out to look at her engine. She was doing something g under the hood but I could not see. Then she put the hood down and got back into the car. Then she continued cranking and cranking and cranking and the puffs of smoke and the sound of that smooth ungeared starter filled the air. I looked at my watch and knew I was going to be cutting it close so I started walking toward school. My friends didn’t show up anyway. Too bad. They missed a great show.

Thanks for that memory! Growing up in the 50's and 60's, this happened to me far more than once. I feel blessed to have seen many similar situations. Pedalpusher
