Halloween was always fun on our street. Everyone got into the spirit, and all the houses were decorated. The one person who got most into it was a single mom who lived a few doors down from us. Her name was Alison, and I guess because it was just her and her stepson, she kind of liked doing things for all the neighborhood kids. Everyone knew and loved her. Her house was always the gathering point for neighborhood parties and the like. The kids father split, and she took full responsibility of him, even though she was not his biological mother. He was 8 and she had custody of him since he was 5. She did have a full time housekeeper helping out. I was already 14 and was just discovering girls. I also discovered that Alison although in her early 40s was beautiful. She was quite tall, at least 5"9 with wavy auburn hair. This was also about the time that I had discovered this fascination with women and cars. At the time I didn't understand it, but if I saw a women in a large American car, I felt very excited. Or if I was in a car with them, which had happened before. It was the early 80s, and these vehicles were everywhere. Alison drove a very large car, Oldsmobile I believe. Maybe late 70s. I remember it was dark green and had 4 doors. I would see her driving places and thought it would be a dream to drive with her, well 1 day before Halloween my dream came true. I was on my bike coming down the street, and Alison was out front doing some gardening, when she waved me over. She told me that a friend was suppose to take her to the pumpkin patch just outside of the city to pick up a bunch of pumpkins for the next day. He had a pick up truck. He had apparently called her earlier and told her that his truck wasn't running. She was in a bind. His truck was a 4 wheeler and this place was apparently off the beaten path. She had checked a few of the local stores, and all were out of pumpkins. This pumpkin patch was the only place left, and they were practically giving them away, being that Halloween was the next day. She asked me if I could help her out and drive with her to the pumpkin patch. It would take about an hour or so. I said sure, let me go home and ask my folks. They of course said yes. I walked back over to her house and just as I was walking up the walkway she came out. She was wearing white flip flop sandals and a black skirt just above the knee. Her auburn hair was pulled up in a bun. It was an unusually warm late October day, although it had rained a few days before. I asked if her son was coming and she mentioned the housekeeper was there. It was just me and Alison. We hopped in the Olds and she turned the ignition and it started right up. She put the car in drive and we were off. You could definitely feel the power. We stopped at a red light and she was checking a piece of paper for the address. The light changed and the car behind us honked. It startled her, and all of a sudden the car just died. The honking persisted. She put it in gear turned the ignition and it fired back up. She then popped it back into drive, but because her sandaled foot was almost to the floor the car lurched forward squealing the tires and no doubt leaving a long thick skid mark. She looked over at me smiled and said I hope I didn't scare you. I said no that was awesome, have you done that before. She laughed and said Yes I've left some rubber on the streets, but only when I'm by myself. I asked her if she would do it again, she just smiled and said ok, just don't tell your folks. We got to the patch, which was off the main highway. It was a dirt road, but because of the recent rains there was a good amount of mud. You could hear the tires sloshing through, but we made it. There were a few other people there. The farmer said she could take as many pumpkins as she wants, free of charge. I helped her load about 10 of them into her large trunk. She thanked the farmer and we left. We exited down a different road, which had more mud ruts and was harder to maneuver. The tires were really spinning. Inevitably we got stuck. We got out of the car, I actually had to climb out the drivers side where it wasn't too bad, because the passenger side was really muddy. We looked for something to put under the rear passenger tire. We decided to sacrifice one of the pumpkins. We smashed it and shoved underneath the tire. I waited outside the car while Alison put pedal to metal and rocked the car back and forth, tires squealing and spinning. After 3 or 4 times of this the car broke free. She went about 100 more feet to clear the car from the rut. I ran up hopped in, and she floored it. She thanked me so much for helping her, and was sorry about my sneakers getting all dirty. She promised to buy me a new pair. As we pulled out of the dirt road to the main highway, there was one more muddy rut we had to negotiate. She floored it and the tires spun in place for a few seconds, but once they hit pavement, the tires let out a loud almost guttural squeal for about 50 feet. Alison looked over at me almost motherly, grabbed my hand. and said see I told you I'd do another burnout. We just laughed. She actually peeled out 2 more times on the way home.

Did her car ever not start?  Did she ever flood it?  Did she always wear sandals?

I don't remember it not starting or flooding, but that was never my thing. I was always more into driving, getting stuck, and seeing tires spinout. I only drove with her one more time, Which I will write about at a later date. A couple of years later she ended up moving away.
