i had a request to tell a story where my mother was wearing flip flops. Of course there are many and she didn’t just wear heels, sometimes she wore flip flops or sneakers.
There was a lake just outside our town we would occasionally visit because it was a fun place to go, not too crowded and it was free. Having no money, free sealed the deal.
On this day we were home on Sunday after church and it was hot out. My mom told me to get my bathing suit on because we were going to the lake. My grandma didn’t like the lake so we went alone. My mom was wearing her bathing suit, a two piece with a white blouse over it and flip flops. We got to the lake no problem and I found some friends there and we had a good time. My mom was sitting on the beach talking with some other people.
After a few hours there the lake started to empty out and it was getting dark so we packed our stuff and headed to the car. The lot was nearly empty when we got in and she tried to start the bug but it just cranked. She kept trying to get it started, her foot pumping the gas pedal over and over until it started sputtering. Other people were leaving and one car came over to us to see if we needed help. My mother was in the middle of a long cranks with some sputtering and she kept at it and the car started. She said I’m fine and the other car drove off.
My mom revved the gas pedal and let the car idle before backing out and pulling off down the road that lead to the entrance of the lake.
We got to a point where there was a speed bump and she slowed down. We went over the speed bump and the car died. She was pumping the gas pedal to try to keep it going but it did not work.
She tried to start it up but it just cranked. She tried again for a long crank, pumping the gas pedal, but it would not start. After maybe five or ten minutes she stopped to give the car a rest. We just sat there on the side of the road. I remember asking if we could put on the radio and she said no because it would drain the battery so we just sat there for a while.
She tried to start it again, gripping the steering wheel and pulling herself up and pumping the gas pedal. After a few tries it started sputtering but it didn’t start. She tried it a few more times but it just cranked. She gave it another rest for a while. It was getting dark and the battery was sounding weak.
She tried it again and got it started. We drove back relived to make it home.

Was she wearing nail polish? What color? We’re her soles wrinkly?

Also, did she leave her heel on the floor or did she lift it off her flip flop?

Red nail polish, I don’t recall and wrinkles, and she pumped the gas pedal both ways, sometimes holding it to the floor but never long enough.
When she did hold it to the floor as soon as it sounded like it would turn over she would start pumping it again and made it worse. It is a miracle she ever got it started. To this day I don’t understand it, but she swore by pumping the gas pedal.
