I can tell more stories about the beetle but it would be the same stories or very similar to the ones I have posted. Unless there is a request from one of the readers, the only story to tell is of the last day, how the beetle died, and what part I played in it.
We got in the car after church, my mom and grandma in front, me in the back seat. My mom was wearing her “Sunday best” a blue dress that came to he knees, tan pantyhose and white scrappy sandals. She pumped the gas pedal twice and cranked the engine while holding the gas pedal down. The engine cranked but did not turn over, and she started pumping the gas pedal, bobbing her leg up and down. The long first crank was followed by a long second crank and more pumping. As usual she kept at it, but the car was not starting.

A few people asked if she needed help but she smiled and said no. A family we know came up to the car and was talking to my grandma while my mother kept trying to start it, the cranks were very long, maybe a minute or more at a time, and her battery was draining..and died. The woman talking to my grandma told her husband to get his car and give my mom a jump. My grandma got out and I removed the rear seat exposing the battery compartment.

He hooked up the jumper cables and eventually my mom got it started. The cables were removed, I replaced the back seat and we were on our way.

We were driving down the road and my grandma offered to take us out to lunch at McDonalds. This was a big treat for me and I was very excited. I started bouncing up and down on the seat, when suddenly if felt like there was a beehive under my ass! I looked down and my ass almost immediately got very hot, and there was smoke coming out of the seat!

I yelled Mom! Mom! The cars on fire! I climbed up into the front and my mom pulled over. We all got out and watched from a distance the car fire expanded

and the car was engulfed in flames. My mom was holding me and crying. My grandma was stunned. The police and fire department came and put it out. Of course the car was gone for good.

It turns out that there was a protective cover that was not on, and with me getting older (and growing) the additional weight, and with my jumping on the seat, the seat springs shorted the battery and started the fire.

So in a way it was my fault. So that is the end of the beetle. If you want more stories with that car just let me know what you want.

Well a glorious end for that trouble-making car after all. :-) Nice story. Looking back to read more stories with other cars.

Wow.   Hey, that's one way to get rid of a piece of sh . . . . car for sure.   Actually my friend, I am very happy you came out of it (physically at least) unscathed.  Usually shorting the battery terminals ends badly for folks nearby.   One day, maybe 45 or so years ago, I was at a Sears automotive waiting for some tires to be installed, when one of their "mechanics" dropped a wrench and short-circuited the battery he was clamping into some lady's Pontiac Grand Prix.   A fire broke out and a couple of people got injured (presumably the mechanic was one of them).   I just remember the cops and ambulances pulling up in minutes.

Did she ever wear sandals without hose? I like the barefoot in sandals so much.  Maybe thongs or flip-flops while gently pumping the gas trying to get her car to start.

What did she get after the Beetle burned,

Great stories. I read them all and I can imagine that it was a great show. I experienced it in a similar way with my mother in her little Fiat, posted also in this chat. One question  did your mother tried it also without shoes? Slips out of her heels and tried it with her pantyhose covered foot  Did shehad paintedtoenails regularly

She never took her shoes off in the car, but she always had painted nails. She often wore open toe shoes and sandals with pantyhose to Church as that was what many women wore at the time. From the back seat I could see her painted nails through her pantyhose.

Thank YOU. I know I am several months late responding, but I would love to hear more stories about more heated arguments while cranking and pumping. Ever witness a woman crank and pump in platform wedge sandals? If so, DO SHARE. I am quite envious of your experiences, sir.
