I remember one fall day we were leaving school. Mom was dressed in her work clothes in a dress with tan pantyhose and white pumps. After my last class I went to the office to meet her. She was still working so I sat down and waited for her.
We left a little later than normal as the parking lot was almost empty. We got into her white beetle and she tried to start it but it just cranked. She was pumping the gas pedal like she always did but the car did not sound like it would start. When this happened it would normally sputter but this time it just cranked.
She was very determined and even grabbed the back of the steering wheel pulling herself us and really pumping the gas pedal but the car would not start. She tried for a very long time, it must have been 20 minuets or more. The battery got weaker and weaker until it died and the car would not turn over.
We got out of the car and went back into the school and found the custodian who had helped us before. He came out and my mom got in the car and turned the key to show the battery had died. The weird thing was that the battery in her car was under the rear seat so he had to take that out to hook up his jumper cables. He asked me to hold the passenger door open so the cables would not get pinched or fall off so I did.
So I stood there watching my mom try to start it while he worked on the engine. I stood there with a perfect view watching her try over and over again to get it started. Eventually it started and we thanked him and drove off. She thanked me for helping her.
From that day on when ever she needed a jump start my job was to hold the door open for her. I can’t explain how I felt, I wasn’t turned on but I could not stop watching her try to start the car.
