At the time I grew up in the late 70s and early 80s it was nice to see people with car problems around our neighborhood.
One summer afternoon around 1980 or so I rode with my mom to the bank. I heard the sound of a car cranking but not starting as we pulled into the parking lot. She left me in the car and went inside. There was a lady with her kids across from us in a big Mercury that wouldn’t start. I remember feeling embarrassed for her as she held the starter forwell over a minute at s time. The big engine would sound like it was very close to starting but just would not turn over. I could see her staring intently at the dashboard and occasionally slightly rocking her upper body suggesting that she was holding and pumping the pedal. She would wait for two or three minutes in between a few of the tries. I could lip read a couple “damn!” and “come on!”
