When i was like 14-18 my first girlfreind's name was Crissy (spelled Chrissy). And she was around for a quite a few of the "warm ups" mom put the old buick through. And she had literally a grocery list of problems (her career goal was to be a stripper, she smoked at 14, she stole from the charity store, stole from other stores, never knew who her father was and subconciensly hated men for it, and she was a total B***H - really not a pleasant person). But at that age she was pretty (nice body too), gave me the time of day, and lived less than a block away. She was a bit of a sadist or masochist (not sure which one). It was the one that took the pleasure in the pain and suffering of others and for that matter cars. I remember when i was like 14 or so she wanted to rev the buick too after seeing my mom do it. So quite a few times when my mom and dad went somewere they took the better car and left that poor lil Century at home. So we had quite a few sessions with the Buick, it was just such a waste though because I wasnt fully aware of my fetish and was too paranoid of being caught. For the record she wasn't a pumper in the fact she knew how to get a carburated car started in a hurry, almost scary that she was far better at it than my mother and she wasnt old enough to drive. If my mom didn't wear her loafers crissy (convenently the same shoe size) would wear them and call it "playing house". Chrissy normally wore those cheap white canvas KEDS lace up shoes or dime store flip flops. I was sooooooo paranoid about being caught thought, if the nieghbors caught us and told myparents or if my parents came home earlier than planned I would have been so busted. To fuel the paranoia one time my mom like just filled up the car and drove it a lil (which meant it got revved). And my parents went to go visit the grandparents with the other car. I stayed back you know at 14/15 it is uncool to do those things and Crissy came over. And she wanted to rev it soooooo bad. She used sex as a bargaining chip to get things like that out of me, so sometimes I wonder if she is the cause of the fetish. So she went at it for like 15 minutes or so. She got what she wanted then I got what I wanted. I was never too worried about the noise, because Crissy patterned the revving after my mom so it wouldn't arouse suspicion from the nieghbors. She loved flooring it, but not doing it was a concession to my parania and probably saved us fromgetting caught. I think that was like a holiday weekend and my dad went to work the next day with the other car. And my mom was dropping me off for baseball I think and after the usual few minute "warm up" she pulled the car out and was like all bent cause there was only 3/4 of a tank of gas. I remeber when we got home her asking my dad if he used the car but he didn't. It was let go after that, but I was definetly more paranoid. Lets just say after that the gas fromthe lawnmower can ended up in the buick a few times. I really don't see what she was bent over, because the next timeI tracked her filling up she was like averaging 8MPG with a car that should have gotten over 20. I was able to track it because she normally filled up during Saturday while we were running errands. I still remember it was 83 miles for the week and a hair under 10 gallons went in. I am sure the fact it was old and crappy didnt help, but spending 5-10 revving the snot out of it everytimeshe started the cardidnt help. Grant it in the driveway/garage I would ballpark the the revving/racing at like 2,000-2,500 r.p.m. both by her and Chrissy with the latter possibly being more agressive. But I was with mom when it acted up at like the end of a parking lot, trust me it got the snot revved out of it, in the foot pegged to the floor fashion. Or ifshe was actually driving it and it was stumbling and running rough and it would persist she would pull it into the forest preserve parking lotor a vacant lotif no one was there and "blow out the carbon until it smooths out". And on more than a few occasions I was asked "if it had enough punishment" or if it "was running smooth yet" as she continued flooring and releasing the gas pedalwith the car shaking a little each movement of her right foot. I really thought the engine was gonna blowon numerous occasions. She would alter pegging it and holding it for what seemed like forever and just gunning it over and over. Chrissy was with us more than a few of those times and of course she encouraged the revving. I am sure that just added to Chrissy's arsenal against cars later. I still remember when it was acting up with Chrissy in the car my mom saying "oh this is so embarassing" and "I just cant see why it can't behave". I didn't know what valve float was back then, but I do now and those valves floatedmore times than I can count on my hands. The car had a 3.0 liter V6 and I can swear under oath that they had some really crappy carburators, but those engines are bulletproof! As Crissy and I aquired driver liscenses we both got our beaters. I was too paranoid with mine as I was not broke but not rich enough to afford another car, so I kinda kept Chrissy out of mine. But Chrissy got her grandmother's old Buick Regal (like a 1982-87 2 door) with that venerable buick 3.8v6 and a really good carb. It really didnt need to be revved at all, but was extensively. Chrissy too didn't know what valve float was but she loved to do it to that old Buick. And she absolutely loved revving it with the pedal pegged to the floor and flooring it over and over until the car was like shaking violently everytime it was floored. It developed a bad rod knock. That is why I make that statement that the 3.0 was bulletproof. The Regal didnt got through even half the hell the Century(sold shortly afterI turned 15 and still running)went through and it was wounded. Over time we became different people and drifted. She just got too crazy for me. But she is a fond memory. At the time she brought a lot of grief, too much drama, and some fun along the way And everytime I see YOU (posting something) Crissy, I think of her and it puts a grin on my face. What a small world that your name would be Crissy too. Just thought I would share.

i do remember when i worked an elderly lady had a buick century with the 3.0 V6 and front wheel drive. and she would literally ( i would watch from a 3rd floor window overlooking the parking lot) watch her in the cold winter days bouce (obviously pumping the gas) for a good 30 seconds then lean back in the sit (hoilding the pedal to the floor) and when it start it would sputter and spit out black smoke but she just held it there until it came to full rev and then would still hold it down for good 10-15 seconds. use to remember other people watching her especially when it began roaring. anyways one day she came to me and said i have a noise in my car i think it is exhaust. so at lunch we went out and she floored it and i said i think you have a rod knocking, so she took it someplace and they confirmed it. but overall that little engine was roaring quite a lot before that and even after she still would hold it to the floor.

a few questions I hope u can answer for me and then a comment

1.) what kinda footwear did she do this with?

2.) how long did this poor car last in the terms of a few monthes or like 3 years?

3.) was this done year round or just in the cold?

4.) what color was the car (nosey)

5.) what she just sick of trying to be nice to it to keep it running.....and just revved the piss out of it??....which leads me to this comment

while my mom had that Century the next door nieghbor divorced mother of 2 had one of the last carburated honda accords (maybe 1990) and it ran like crap too.  And she saw on numerous occasions "warming up" the buick.  My mother was never as abusive to it as that ladied dennisthemenace described unless it was acting up and she was in a secluded spot.  She was over and they were talking women things (gossip) and I was in the other room.

mom = M

nieghbor ladie = NL

NL "i noticed u spend a lot of time racing your engine...do u have a problem with your car"

M "yeah the mechnic said it needs a lot of stuff to run right and its more than we paid for the car"

NL "mine runs horrible too, but  I try to aviod doing that too often because I dont want to blow up my engine"

M "Oh, I don't really care anymore. I tried being nice to it, but it only seems to respond to being beat on hard and often"

NL "what if blow up the engine"

M "between u and me I kind of hope I do.  I really hate that car and we have the money for a new one but we are holding off.  So I dont really care if it wants to run or not"

I THINK THIS CONVERSATION HAPPENED AND THEN LIKE 3-4 MONTHES LATER THE CAR WAS SOLD.  Oh and why was this women basically intentionally flooding it to start it?  And then gunning it like that, was she in the same boat as my mom that this it would cost too much to fix and she was just sick of fussing with the car.  DENNIS, honestly, even in the summer mom commited a good 4-5 minutes to a "warm up" consisting of 2,000 to 2,500 rpm revvings and just racing it for a minute or two.  Basically she had the attitude of screw the car I would rather do this than have a problem.

she was elderly widow (i rarely spoke to her ) came to work fall as temp secretarty, she wore sneaks most of the time. the car was dark blue and i remember it having consolke with automatic shift on the floor and it had full instrumentation including tach. the one time i did speak with her i did advise noit holding it all the way, but she said i have to only way it will stay running. it was still running when she left in spring (she was filling in as a temp) but knocking pretty good.

i believe she was a widow and this was early 90's, i think the car was 82 or 83. i was in mid 40's my guess she was 60ish.

Yeah, but 30 seconds of pumping before she started the car...that is a total flood job.  Dennis I am begining to think it is just you and me on the revving part of this board!

i agree, don;t know who told her to do that or if she was just naturally on her own, but because of that excessive pumping once the car started it would barely run (almost like watching clare or kimmy on pp.org clips) where the engine spits sputter but in this case she (pauline was her name by the way) would just keep her foot planted right down until it cleared itself out and began to roar.

and i do like pumping but to me it was always the excitement of what was to happen once the engine started. would they just let up on gas give it a few quick revs, would it stall out and then the next start be more aggressive, those were things i looked forward to.

Agreed.  That  "whats next" is exciting.  I always enjoyed watching the struggle, but these half hour pumping sessions are so far off reality.  But my favorite part was once the struggle was over......THE PUNISHMENT!!!!!! Or in the case of that poor Century, the continous punishment because mom just didnt give a f**k wheather it lived or died.  I use to enjoy the fact the I would wash the car in the driveway and mom would pull it in.  It sometimes took a good 15 minutes to move it less than 15 feet, that was assuming there was no audience (meaning dad not being home or me loitering around in common site).  Not to say she wouldn't rev the piss out of it with me around, just she wasnt quite as excessive from a time standpoint if she knew i was around. And when it got pulled into the garage, and was put into park if the engine began racing it would be revved out all over again.

Oh I forgot:

One time when the century was at the mechanic and I was around I saw him shoot the wires with a fine mist of water and it started running crappy right away.  I asked what was that he did (i was like 14/15 and learning) and he said that the way to tell if wires are bad and these were bad.  But as long the car ran mom didn't want a penny more going into it.

So if I was washing the car and I knew mom slipped off I would set the car up that way, by popping the hood and just getting the wires a little wet.  That was always a show and almost always involved her going into the house to grab her purse and take a drive to the forest preserve to "clear it out", "give it  the punishment it has coming", or if she was in a good mood "an italian tune-up".  The forest preserve was across one busy street literally around the block from the house and it was surronded by 2 busy streets, so a screaming car could hardly be heard.

As I said mom had like a self imposed limitation on how hard it got revved at home (probably 2,000-2,500 r.p.m.), probably being a good nieghbor.  But she had her spots were all bets were off.  I wish I could have saw her at work she had to close the place down and was the last one in the lot and I remember a few times were she wasn't leaving work for another half hour her having to go.....TO WARM UP THE CAR!!  I remember a few of those times were after a car wash session and her telling me "I have to go warm up the car.  It gave me a problem early so I have to spend a little extra time with it to make sure its gonna run right.  That car is such a piece of s**t!"  I can only imagine what she did to that poor car in an abandoned parking lot for 30 minutes!
