I keep meaning to tell this story, which happened about fifteen years ago.
I was stuck in traffic at a red light in a busy intersection. I was in the right lane, and in the lane to my left was a teenage girl, blonde, pretty, wearing shorts. Her early 70's Volvo station wagon had stalled, and she was cranking to start it. It was hot out, and her windows were down so I could hear her cursing the car. She cranked and the car sputtered, backfired and stalled. She kept cranking, more and more desperate as the light down the hill turned green, hitting the steering wheel with her palm, bouncing and pumping for all she was worth. She just held the key, with the car sputtering and backfiring, but not starting. As the line of cars in front of her started moving, she took her foot off the brake and started rolling, still cranking, drier and drier, more and more desperate, pumping and bouncing and cursing. I followed alongside, until I was forced to turn right where she was going straight. Fortunately for her, she'd gained enough momentum to make it across the intersection, still cranking as far as I could tell, and she coasted into a service station with an active garage. At that point I was forced to drive away.

I had a Volvo of that vintage, and it could be very hard to start sometimes. It wasn't the loudest cranking car, but I had some good sessions with it. It had a manual choke, which made for a lot of possibilities. By pulling it out just enough, the engine would struggle and crank, but not quite start. It was thrilling. Once, I let my two roommates, both good looking women, borrow it to run an errand. I told them how to use the choke, but forgot to tell them to use it only on a cold engine. A while later I got a call from them saying they couldn't get the car started after they'd run their errand. I sure wish I'd been there to see it! I told them to push the choke in, hold the gas pedal to the floor, and it should start after 10-15 seconds of cranking. It did. but what a missed opportunity!

Nice one! :-) Stoplight stallings are among the best.

Yeah, some of my favorites! There's nothing like the desperation inspired by a line of cars behind a woman's stalled and cranking car.
A few other sightings from the distant past:

1. Grade school, ca. 1968: A mother desperately cranks her early 60's Mercedes at a school crossing, her young teen daughter watching her crank and pump.

2. College, ca. 1978: A woman cranks her Peugeot as the light turns green. Someone honks, she pumps and cranks and pumps and cranks, but nary a sputter.

3. College, ca. 1979: My girlfriend's roommate rolls into the street as her Chevy Nova shudders and dies, then a long struggle begins as the cross traffic backs up. Minutes of cranking, then finally the Nova springs to life and she drives off with a relieved wave of her hand.

Gosh, those were the days! Don't see that stuff anymore!

Oh, and I almost forgot the woman cop in a late 70's Dodge, who had to do several really long cranks to get her cop car started. Damn! Was she hot!
A friend who was an ex-cop said all the cops hated those 70's-era Chrysler cars, which took forever to start.
